ABOUT US
My name is Ethan Balno. I am a WingChun Kuen, TaiJi Quan, XingYi Quan Instructor and I hand make the Wooden Dummies. I have been practicing many different kinds of martial arts for more than twenty-two years. For the past fourteen years I have directed my study and practice to WingChun Kuen and the internal martial arts. I started my training in the U.S.A. and continued in Asia. I have been living in Indonesia for twelve years and call it my home. My martial arts school, equipment production and permanent residence is in Bali.
Because I have been practicing WingChun Kuen for many years and have much experience and knowledge about the Wooden Dummy I feel it is necessary that I do most of the work myself so that everything is made correctly. In addition to being a WingChun Kuen Instructor I am also a skilled carpenter. I have been producing Wooden Dummies for the past 3 years. I have received many high compliments and praises on the craftsmanship and quality of my products. ABOUT THE WOOD
I use only the best Old Teak Wood from Java, Indonesia. Java is one of the best places for Old Teak Wood. What is the meaning of "Old Teak Wood"? This means that the trees were at least 60 years old when they were cut down and also that they were cut down many years ago thus making this the best quality wood. None of the Old Teak Wood I use has come from freshly cut trees. Much of the wood is coming from very old teak houses, boats or furniture. This is better for the environment and also since the wood has been around for a long time It is very dry and therefore excellent for exporting.
I choose this wood because of its special qualities. It is very strong and can withstand extreme temperature and weather conditions. It is also rich in natural oils so it is naturally water resistant and resistant to wood boring insects. Old Teak Wood is especially good for playing WingChun because of its outer softness and inner strength like steel wrapped with cotton. In addition, the Old Teak Wood is a beautiful dark red and or golden brown. When the golden brown color streaks through the wood it looks like sun rays in a sunset. Because of its natural beauty I choose only natural finishing products with no added color. Natural finishing products will not irritate your skin.
The best feature of the Dummy is the leg. It is one solid piece of Antique Teak Wood from the trunk to the ground. Very strong, approximately 8cm/ 3.25in in diameter at the top and 6cm/ 2.25in in diameter at the bottom. Also the leg has a bit of room in the trunk to move around. This makes it great for practicing sweeping techniques.
There are three types of Dummies that can be ordered, however, special orders are possible also. The Traditional Live Dummy, the Free Standing Dummy, and the Stand Alone Dummy are all available for small or large orders. All bolts and screws are stainless steel except for the larger anchoring bolts used on the stand alone Dummy. All steel pipe and plates used are 9 - 12 mm thick. The size of the steel, bolts and screws is larger than what is needed. I do this because I want the quality of the Dummies to be the best and strongest to ensure a long life.
